Varietal improvement: natural improvement
Since 1995, we have been involved in a project for varietal improvement in collaboration with CRA-FRF (Consiglio per la Ricerca e la Sperimentazione in Agricoltura, Agricultural Research and Development Council) in Forlì and the Province of Verona. The project aims to select new varieties of strawberries suitable for cultivation in our region and for picking in the autumn.
The plan envisages three experimental fields where 2,500 seedlings (seeds from crossing different varieties) and 500 selections are monitored and assessed for their agronomic properties (productivity, ripening period, shelf life, etc.) and for their organoleptic properties (degrees Brix, acidity) to ensure they can become a variety.
To date, three strawberry varieties have been patented since the start of the project. Dora, Irma and Eva currently cover over 60% of the varietal scene in the Veronese area.
This process allows obtaining natural products that have not been genetically modified. Our products come from our land.
